Thoughts and Impressions about the GG&G Lens Cover

When I first received my lens cover and quick mount, I was a little surprised by the simplicity of the lens cover.  I opened it and formed an opinion about how it must have mounted even before reading the instructions.  My initial impression and thought had me quickly checking the GG&G website to see if I received the correct item for my application.  I was initially thinking that the lens cover must have just slid into the housing with out having to remove the actual EOTech protective hood.  I was wrong.  When reading through the directions It became obvious how this piece of equipment actually worked.

Overall impressions.  I believe this item works as advertised.  I think that it takes a little more pressure than I like to both seat and release the lens covers, but this will also aid in keeping it closed.  If you have any damage to the metal protective hood on the EOTech, this item would not close and latch properly.  Just something to keep in mind if you use your item in the actual field and have some damage to the hood.

When the rear cover flips open, you will hear a light 'metallic slap" when the cover is making contact with the metal protective hood.  GG&G provides a solution for this.  I recommend using either the felt "pad" or even a small dab of black RTV sealant.

I am comfortable recommending this product and hope you enjoy this product as much as I do.  It is a well thought out product and I'm sure there is a designer at EOTech that is kicking them self right now.  THANKS GG&G!

In this picture you can see the standard EOTech 512 Holographic sight with the new "Hood" and flip up lens covers above of the unit.  When we have finished our installation the new hood will actually go inside the metal protective hood.  Read on to see the install and our thoughts after the install.

From this point on, the new GG&G Protective covers will be referred to as: GG&G H/LC (GG&G Hood/Lens Cover)

The first step will be to remove the left side protective hood screws.  This side is the non adjustment side.  Once you have removed this side, continue on and remove the adjustment side.  Be sure to take care and retain all the components you are removing.

*Note:  This picture shows the EOTech Accucam QD System (reviewed as well).

Now that we have the left side screws removed we have moved on and are removing the right side.  All the hardware you are removing will be reused when you reassemble this unit.
Now that you have both sets of retaining screws removed from the protective hood on your EOTech, slide the hood off.  You will now be installing the GG&G H/LC.
According to GG&G's instructions you need to insert the hood inside on its side.  You can see here that we are looking at the rear of the metal protective hood and the top of the hood/lens cover combo is canted 90 Degrees to the right.  We will now rotate the GG&G H/LC to the left 90 degrees to properly fit the unit inside the factory EOTech metal protective hood.
As you see here, the left side (when looking at from the rear) is properly seated and the right side (Adjustment side) is about to slide into position.  At this point, just a little loving push will properly seat the GG&G H/LC into place.
Once you have finished with the install you can sit back and marvel at the simplicity at which this install was.  We will now be reinstalling the EOTech protective hood back on the holographic sight system.
In this picture you can see a SMALL "White line" which is actually the front lens cover spring.  This little spring was actually problematic when trying to slide the new cover back onto the sight.  I used a small screwdriver to get the edge of the spring "unstuck" and with a little nudging the covers slid right on.  I slid my cover slightly past being "Properly Aligned" just so when I returned it to the proper place it would fit without binding the GG&G H/LC.
At this point, reverse the steps you took for disassembly to reassemble the unit.  You see here we have the EOTech Accucam QC System reinstalled.  You can see how the GG&G H/LC is in its new home.  LOOKS GOOD don't you think?

As you see, the rear mount lays flat on the top of the unit, the front acts as a sun shade.

Both unit closed, they snap shut with a tension type clasp.  While this holds the covers firmly closed, it also can be a little bit of a challenge to get them open.
From this angle you can see a slight "discoloration" on the top of the OEM protective hood.  This is the point at which the GG&G H/LC contacts the factory metal hood.  GG&G includes 4 felt "pads" to deaden the sound of metal on metal as well as working to prevent any discoloration as shown.  (Looks like a small scratches)
For those who already have a "Scope Coat" this unit will still fit under that cover as well.
