Thoughts and Impressions about the Accucam QD Locking Lever

This product is a very solid design.  Very simple to install and use.  For users who will typically just use their sight on a single firearm they may not typically need to use this product other than to expedite the removal of your holographic optic.  I like the to use this to help when cleaning my AR.  When the upper assembly is upside down (during cleaning) the cleaning solution and oil may have a tendency to work its way down to the optic.  Removing the optic will eliminate any concern about this.

For more practical reasons than I can come up with right now this product will serve many shooters and fellow military members reading this.  As stated, I use this to help facilitate removing my optic during cleaning.  Due to the design I have not had to re-zero my weapon during reinstallation and I would recommend this product to anybody who:

  • Frequently removes their optic
  • Uses this optic on multiple firearms
  • Prefers to operate with fewer tools on hand

Upon opening the package when received from GG&G you see the included Accucam, screws and install tools.  To the right was the included screw and Allen wrench that was included with the 512.

After removing the mounting screw (One that holds the unit on a Picatinny rail) we will remove the two protective hood screws on the NON ADJUSTMENT SIDE of the sight.
Now that the original hood screws (shown above the new QD Latch) are removed you will feed the long Picatinny screw back into the hole where the OEM Picatinny rail screw was located (Center hole, under the word "Enforcement")
After you have gotten the screw in, slowly and carefully turn the QD clockwise to slowly screw onto the catch on the adjustment side to start to reassemble the sight.
The screw is being screwed into the catch/ on the adjustment side of the QD.  (Indicated by the Red Arrow)  Before you proceed to the next step, be sure to have your Loctite ready for the two replacement hood screws.
After you have gotten the latch screw started finish with installing the two (longer) supplied hood screws.  The hood screws are longer because of the increased thickness  of the Accucam QD attached  to the hood.  Be sure to use "Blue Loctite" and torque to the recommend specifications.
At this point you have finished your reassembly.  From this angle you see the Picatinny rail set screw and latching mechanism.  When the cam is opened it will release the latching mechanism allowing the 512 to be removed without the requirement of any tools.
For those who already have a "Scope Coat" this unit will still fit under that cover as well.

UPDATE!!!!
6/10/08

I have not shot this rifle since the install but noticed when updating the flash suppressor / compensator on the AR that the lack of an actual "fitted" key on the rail and just using the bolt allows the optic to actually move fore and aft.  I'll keep you updated when I get this out to the range and see if any noticeable difference in "zero" can be observed with this issue.
