Pierce Grip Extensions mounted on Springfield Armory XD-40 (Subcompact) and Kahr PM9 (Subcompact)

Parts that will be needed:

  • Pierce Grip extension for your application

  • User supplied firearm

  • Safety Glasses

Thoughts and Impressions about the Pierce Extensions:

If your concealed carry is of the 3" barrel design, you know how short the magazine and magazine well can be.  Considering both of these pistols are used as dedicated "Carry" weapon, using the extended magazine that was supplied with both would have potentially compromised the covertness of the Subcompact.  Using the extension gives you 100%  of the benefits (other than the extra rounds) and still keeps the element of surprise on your side.

I don't know of anybody who would want a concealed carry that is not concealed.  The potential problem with the Subcompact class is maintaining sights on target on follow up shots can be tricky at best with Subcompacts.  Using these extensions offers you many value added benefits:

  • Maintains the ultra-small "footprint" on the carriers body

  • Provides stability usually only offered on non-concealing (Compact) pistols

  • VERY inexpensive!

Shown here are both of the pistols and the extensions for both firearms.  The plus side of the Kahr product is two extensions are provided!
This is the "Before" photo photo of the XD40.  You will obviously note that the users pinky finger rests under the magazine.  With strong handed individuals, plus using a second hand, this is typically enough to fire defensively.
Due to the "Single Stack" size magazine of the Kahr, and the the individual using this as her Concealed Carry, we only felt confident with going with a 9mm due to the recoil and lack of holding area of this pistol.  Due to the way the world is quickly becoming, we wanted to ensure that both users could be as accurate with follow up shots.  Thus we researched options to keep the subcompact size and maintain accuracy.  The solution... Pierce Grip Extensions!
Pictured at the top is the XD40 magazine and extension, followed by the PM9's.
Out of the two products being reviewed the XD Product seemed to be an over all exceptional value.  The XD's short height combined with the .40 caliber offered any un expecting shooter a bit more recoil than anticipated.  Both the grip extension were 100% top quality.  I believe the over all better quality of the XD made the finished product when installed on the XD look first class.
Step 1:
Remove any ammunition you may have in the magazine you are going to make the magazine foot replacement on.

Note:  In this picture we have already slid the "Foot" forward by pushing the small "Detent nub" in and slide the foot in the only direction it will go.

The hole in the bottom of the OEM Magazine foot is obvious in this photo.  Just push the nub in with your thumb nail while simultaneously pushing the foot forward.
At this point, be VERY careful.  The magazine is under  a tremendous amount of pressure with the follower at the top, spring and the "Nub Plate" inside the magazine.  While we experienced no complications, if you are unsure of the spring's tension have a qualified gunsmith perform the swap.  Another option would be to put a large bag over the end of the foot.  This will help to "capture" anything that gets away in the event it does.  This is also why we recommend wearing safety glasses.
While holding the "Nub Plate" in with the heel of our thumb, sliding off the OEM Foot Plate, we slide on the Pierce Grip extension.
After the grip extension is locked in place, the magazine can be checked for fit and proper operation.  If you have any dummy rounds (Snap Caps) you can cycle the slide to ensure the magazine spring is not bound up.

Once you are sure of proper operation, re-load the magazine with the bad guys least favorite flavor of lead and re-conceal your firearm.

This product when mated with the XD was an EXCEPTIONAL VALUE!

Thoughts and Impressions about the Pierce Extensions:

Due to the size of the Kahr's Magazine, we knew we would want a supplemental form of control for this firearm.  Another concern is the user is a female.  We wanted to be sure than any follow up shots used with this pistol would remain on target and be as sure as the first shot.

Face it folks.  If a person is going to be targeted, its probably not going to be the 200# guy who looks like he can handle himself.  its going to be the 120# woman that the bad guy thinks he can over power.  With this in mind, I wanted to get the little lady a .40 cal.  Hey, stopping power is stopping power!

The problem was we knew with the size that the 9mm would be a large enough of a challenge to maintain on target without some form of supplemental aid.  With these thoughts in mind, we picked up the PM9.  This offers her small frame the ability to conceal and we knew we could find that supplemental aid we so badly needed.

  • Ensures 100% accuracy on follow up shots.

  • Gives the shooter back the control and ability to properly maintain focus and aim with the weapon.

  • x2 for one low price!

After you have emptied the magazine of any ammunition, flip the magazine over and identify the "Nub" in the magazine foot.
At this angle, you can see the "Nub" that locks the magazine foot in place.
Simply depress the "Nub" and slide the magazine foot forward.  Ensure you are maintaining control of the "Nub Plate".  The only difference between the XD and Kahr product is the Kahr extension includes a new "Nub Plate".  Since you must remove everything as a whole in this application, ENSURE you are wearing your safety glasses and have the opening at the bottom of the magazine pointed in a safe direction as you remove the foot and nub plate.
The spring doesn't look like much, but its sharp and under a significant amount of pressure.  The pressure actually surprised me.  I believe that Kahr uses their stiff spring as a crutch for the mediocre quality of the weapon.  This stiff spring helps to ensure that each successive round is into the chamber as the slide is closing.
You can see we have the spring replaced, the "Nub Plate" installed with the new extension being slid into the location once occupied by the flat "Foot" of the magazine.
The new Pierce grip extension locked in place.
Once you are sure your weapon is unloaded and function checked with dummy rounds (Snap Caps) you can really see how well this new piece performs its required duty.
With the grip relaxed you can see the pinky placement on the new extension.

Due to the lower quality of the Kahr, you will see the large gap at the bottom of the magazine well and the grip extension.  This existed with the OEM Magazine foot as well.  Just another compliant about the quality of the Kahr.  I suppose as long as it goes "BANG" when the trigger is pulled, that is all that counts.

In closing, this product is highly recommended and adds functionality to the pistol.
