Thoughts and Impressions about the Specter MOUT Sling

This company has a solid reputation of supplying top quality products, this sling is a chip off the old block.  The components that were used in this assembly are top notch, and will undoubtedly provide a lifetime of dedicated and useful service.

A while ago I decided I wanted a tactical sling for my AR.  Granted, I just recently got a workbench and have been able to do some deeply needed attention to some of my weapons.  Of this attention was mounting a sling attachment point and sling to my AR.  This is why I'm just now able to post about this product.  While searching for a product I knew some of the qualities I wanted in a sling.  I wanted a sling that when a drop away transition was made I wanted:
  • The rifle to stick to me, always be in the ready position and right up front.
  • Simple use & simple to adjust
  • Fast and seamless transition from left to right shoulder firing positions.

While searching for the exact product I didn't have any first hand experience with any of the products out and available.  So I did a lot of "window shopping".  Specter with their reputation and information guided me through the selection process.

While I initially wanted to go with the CST (Cross Shoulder Transition) Sling this sling didn't fit the requirements I initially set out for myself.  While this sling offered a some of the qualities I wanted, I felt the demonstration showed entirely too much "Hands On" to use this sling to transition between shoulders and was affixed to the front rails.  Both "No-Go's" for my needs, but may suite your needs.

The next sling, the one I almost purchased was one of Specter's CQB (Close Quarters Battle) Slings.  This sling was beat out only because I had later decided I wanted a solo attachment point (Rear of lower assembly where collapsible stock meets lower assembly).  The simple reason for this was I wanted the rifle as clean as possible.  I have rails on my AR and I worried that using a sling that ran down the length of the rifle may limit the use of the rails.
While in a recent tactical shooting class we did use slings such as the CQB Sling from Specter.  While I really enjoyed using and especially the feel of this sling, I had already purchased the sling being reviewed.  I like the versatility of the below MOUT sling, and fully appreciate that the sling does not cover or interfere with the function of the rifle.  While looking at the linked site, be sure to observe the different "Front" mounting options.  We used ones that were specifically mounted to the front sight.  Considering these weapons were fired and cleaned frequently, removing the hand guards would have probably shortened the life of the front "Velcro attachment had that been the option our instructors had chosen.

While there was one more sling that nearly won while trying to make the ultimate decision on which sling to purchase.  This sling was only beaten out because of the perceived tendency of the weapon to "Side Hang".  As displayed in the photo on the left you can see the weapon would tend to hang on the side due to being one complete piece.  The only other noted issue is if the quick release was used the entire assembly would be gone.  While this could be good or bad, I opted to keep a "loop" for the simple notion of purchasing the sling and may even get other attachment points for my other weapons.  This would eliminate the need for multiple slings, I would only need a single sling and multiple attachments for the individual rifles and shotguns.

As you can see from the animated photos to the left, this MOUT (Military Operations in Urban Terrain) sling offered all of the requirements I had set forth.

While setting up the sling, I first had a hard time making the transition between shoulders but found that if I tightened up (shortened) the drop point on the rifle and lengthened the over shoulder/head loop I was able to make an easier transition.

Points to consider:

  • I'm a glutton for punishment.  I shoot my M4 in a "Short Stock" configuration and put my nose ON the charging handle.  If you shoot with your stock extended you may have complications making shoulder to shoulder transitions with this sling.
  • I found when making a drop transition to a side arm this sling tends to swing down into... "The Boys" with more force than I experienced while using the Army's M4 with the CQB sling..
Installation of this product was just as simple as weaving the loose end of the attachment point through GG&G's sling attachment point.  A quick and simple adjustment to fit the users body style and you are fully combat ready!
